Roundup: Brighton, Hartland boys win cross country meets

HOWELL — Brighton, ranked eighth in the Division 1 boys cross country state poll, had six of the top eight runners to beat Northville, 20-38, and Howell, 15-50, Tuesday at Three Fires Elementary School.

Zachary Stewart was first in 16 minutes, 27 seconds, Jack Spamer second in 16:41, Scott Spaanstra fourth in 17:07, Aidan Bustillo sixth in 17:38 and Sean Foster seventh in 17:39 to lead Brighton in its first KLAA Gold meet.

Northville beat Howell, 15-50.

Hartland 27, Grand Blanc 29

HARTLAND — Ethan Stover was second in 17:22, Nick Errer third in 17:37, Devin Rocha sixth in 17:46, Connor Krueger seventh in 17:48 and Eli Horski ninth in 17:52 to lead Hartland to a close victory.

CAAC White jamboree

LANSING — Fowlerville senior Chris Davis was the only runner not from Lansing Catholic to crack the top six, placing second in 17:13.0. James Fedewa won in 17:00.3, leading sixth-ranked (Division 2) Lansing Catholic to a 19-75 victory over Ionia.

Fowlerville was fourth out of six teams with 87 points. Blake Howard was 12th in 18:01.1 and Bryson Scott 16th in 18:37.4 for the Gladiators.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Hartland 23, Grand Blanc 35

HARTLAND — Grand Blanc junior Caitlin Rose won in 19:28, but Hartland had six of the next eight finishers to improve to 3-0 in the KLAA Gold.

Isabella Schmenk was second in 21:02, Emma Smith third in 21:02, Maggie Zimmermann fourth in 21:22, Mackenzie Allan sixth in 21:50 and Sydney Vivian eighth in 22:09 for Hartland.

HOWELL — Lindsey Witte was third in 19:46, Olivia Chandler took sixth in 20:04 and Lindsey Bathish was eighth in 20:45 to lead Brighton. Freshman Yasmine Mansi of second-ranked Northville won in 19:18.

CAAC White jamboree

LANSING — Fowlerville took second out of six teams with 64 points. Lansing Catholic, the second-ranked team in Division 2, had the top three runners on its way to 21 points.

Ollie Updike was sixth (20:24.3), Franny Updike ninth (21:31.3) and Jenna Rigotti 12th (22:12.0) to lead Fowlerville.

Brighton 8, Westland John Glenn 0

WESTLAND — Keegan Gormley and Trevor Dunn scored two goals each for Brighton (7-2-1).

Ian Sosenko, Colin Adam, Paul Schimeck and Austin Lally had Brighton’s other goals.

Williamston 4, Fowlerville 0

FOWLERVILLE — Alex Bowers made eight saves for Fowlerville, which fell to 4-9.

HOWELL — Annie Pietila shot 38, Maggie Pietila and Emme Darkowski 42, and Alyssa Yaggie 43 for Brighton at Chemung Hills.

VOLLEYBALL

Fowlerville 3, Williamston 1

WILLIAMSTON — Fowlerville improved to 2-1 in the CAAC White with a 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-14 victory over Williamston.

Miranda Prochnow had 38 assists and 17 digs; Autumn Barbour had 13 kills and 3 aces; Jackie Jarvis had 10 kills and 10 digs; Grace Wallace had 29 digs; and Dani Ryan had 5 aces for the Gladiators.

Canton 3, Howell 2

HOWELL — Howell won the first two games, but dropped the last three in an 18-25, 23-25, 25-10, 25-23, 15-2 loss to Canton.

Ivy Earl had 17 kills and 22 digs; Jessica Krakowiak had 9 kills and 15 digs; Justina Frantti had 20 digs; and Paige Fowler had 47 assists for Howell (12-6-1, 3-3 KLAA Gold).

Lansing Catholic 6, Fowlerville 2

FOWLERVILLE — No. 4 singles player Josh Leonard and the No. 1 doubles team of Christian Montrose and Caden Flanery had Fowlerville’s only victories.
