The Hartland Powerlifting team made an impressive statement at its first meet of the season, competing this past weekend in Grass Lake against more than 450 lifters from 37 schools across Michigan. For many Eagles, it was their first-ever powerlifting meet—and they rose to the occasion in a big way. The competition opened with the girls divisions, where 8 of Hartland’s 10 female lifters placed in the top 10 of their respective divisions. As a team, the JV girls finished 10th overall out of 27 schools, an outstanding result considering all but one competitor was making her meet debut. Highlighting the day, McKenna Rose and Elise Bernardi each lifted a qualifying total at their very first meet, earning spots at the JV State Competition in March. The boys team followed with equally strong performances. Six of the eight Hartland boys placed in the top 10 in their divisions, with Logan Bergkoetter earning a 3rd-place medal. Like the girls, most of the boys were also competing in their first meet, gaining valuable experience on a big stage. Beyond the results, the Hartland athletes stood out for their character and sportsmanship. Multiple table judges and meet officials took time—amid the fast-paced, chaotic environment—to personally praise the Eagles. Officials noted Hartland lifters volunteering to spot athletes from other schools, cheering for all competitors, and consistently displaying respect and encouragement. One official even remarked on remembering Hartland from last season, pointing out that the team’s positive reputation has now been established for multiple years. Coach Bergkoetter also emphasized how proud she was of the team’s approach to competition, noting their coachability, willingness to learn from mistakes, and readiness to push themselves and take smart risks. With a strong season-opening performance, early state qualifiers, and a reputation for excellence both on and off the platform, the Hartland Powerlifting team is off to an outstanding start.
