HARTLAND, Mich. — The best work in football often happens where the cameras aren’t pointed. This fall, the spotlight found William Tobin anyway. The Hartland lineman has been nominated for the 2026 STATE CHAMPS! Anvil Award, an honor that goes to the best lineman in the state of Michigan. Only 10 players statewide are on the board, and No. 77 is one of them. The company he’s keeping says plenty. The field includes linemen from Detroit King, Detroit Catholic Central, Brother Rice, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and Saline, a list that reads like a tour of Michigan’s heavyweight programs. For anyone who has followed Tobin’s career, the recognition is no surprise. He was an All-KLAA center in 2024, and before last season he won High School On SI’s fan vote as the top returning offensive lineman in Michigan. Now Eagles fans get a say again. The online fan vote counts for 20% of the selection formula, alongside season-long performance (30%), level of competition (20%), big-game performance (15%), team success (10%) and recruiting profile (5%). As of Thursday afternoon, Tobin sat fifth in the voting with 103 of the 1,695 votes cast. Detroit King’s Jameer Henry led the field with 746. There is time to close that gap, with about six weeks of voting remaining. How to vote Fans can vote once per day. Voting requires a free member account on the State Champs website, and ballots can be cast at statechampsnetwork.com/awards/2026-anvil-award. One click a day, every day, for the Eagle wearing 77.
